Solar Thermal FAQ
What is a solar thermal system?
It is a system that allows you to harness the sun’s energy and convert it into heat. The free heat is usually in the form of water and can be used for a multitude of applications including domestic hot water, swimming pool heating, space heating and industrial pre-feed water.
What benefits are there from using a solar thermal system?
In an average family home, a Solar Thermal system will usually provide you with approximately 70-80% of your water heating for free each year. Solar Thermal systems can also be used in commercial buildings and can even heat swimming pools in leisure clubs.
How Does it work?
Most systems operate under the ‘thermosiphon’ principle. Hot water produced during the day is stored in an insulated tank. In this system the tank is located above the solar absorber (the section that collects the heat). Other than this, there are also split systems where the tank is separated from solar absorber
What happens at night or when there is no sunshine available?
Each solar system is sized to meet the daily water demand of the users regardless of when they choose to use the water. Therefore, as part of our site survey we ascertain your water requirements at different times of the day and provide you with an appropriate system. Since the water is stored in an insulated tank you will receive hot water in the night time as well. If there is cloud cover or excessive water demand then a backup heater is available to counter such a situation.

What happens in winter and if I choose to take a bath early in the morning?
Generally in winter the water temperature in the insulated tank can drop by about 8 degrees centigrade. If water consumption has been excessive the day before and an early shower is being taken then the use of the backup may have to be made.
Can the system work with a pressure pump?
Yes. We have different systems for pressure and non-pressure applications.
Where is the system installed?
Generally the system is installed on the roof where it receives direct sunlight. Solar panels can be fitted on all types of roof, flat, pitched or curved, on the majority of buildings. Ideally a roof will be south, south east or south west facing. If trees or buildings create shadow the effectiveness of the system may be reduced. This can all be assessed at a site visit.

How is it installed?
Our energy efficient consultant will guide you on this and provide you with some basic costs based on some preliminary information. A site survey will then be carried out by one of our technicians / engineer and a detailed proposal suggesting the size and type of unit will be provided to you.
How long does it take to install?
A qualified technician will come to your location. Our technicians and engineers try to work with your needs and make every effort to keep disturbance and mess to a minimum, cleaning up carefully behind them.

Do I need to prepare anything?
We can do the entire installation for you.
How long do the systems last?
This should usually take a couple of days, depending on your requirements. Weather conditions can affect installation times, as some work takes place outside your home.
Is the system guaranteed?
Yes. We provide a one year comprehensive warranty.
Are there any maintenance or servicing requirements?
The system should be cleaned regularly to ensure maximum efficiency. We can also engage in a maintenance contract with you for a nominal sum of money if you choose.
Is the work checked/tested?
Your system will be fully tested before we leave and handed over to you.
What should I do if I have any concerns?
Please feel free to contact us at any time to discuss any concerns. We are always happy to deal with any inquiry and most questions can be dealt with quickly for you by our specialist Solar Thermal team. If any fault occurs we will deal with it within 24 hours of the lodging of the complaint.
LED FAQ
What is LED (light emitting diode)
LED is a semiconductor device that emits light on certain wavelength (colour). A die (active area of LED) is encased in plastic or ceramic housing. The housing may incorporate one or many dies.
Why LED?
LEDs provide much higher light output on the same input power as comparable incandescent or fluorescent sources, because of their high efficiencies. This is also because the light emitted from the LED is naturally directional, and in almost all applications less light is lost in the fixture compared to traditional light sources.
Is it expensive?
In some applications LED lights can be expensive whereas in others they are inexpensive. Our engineers help to deliver you a financially viable solution.
What is the life of LED’s?
Typically 30,000 hours. However, the key to ensuring a long life for LED’s is to have proper heat dissipation. LED’s with a good cooling mechanism will last long compared to those that don’t.
Are LED’s dimmable?
Yes. However, you need to have a suitable dimming driver to make sure that you can dim the LED
Can I replace my traditional bulbs with LED’s or do I have to buy entire fixtures?
Yes. However, you need to have a suitable dimming driver to make sure that you can dim the LED.
What happens if my voltage drops?
Most LED’s can withstand a voltage drop upto 100 volts. However, a further reduction from there can damage the LED.
